Ya Raceprez I hear ya I owned a first year AMF after the take over, I remember I wrenched on it. A lot but never recall exactly what I wrenched on. This brought back a lot of memories. The close tolerances on this Harley makes wrenching rough with out experience. Even reading my maintenance manual, which I did can sure lead you into a catch 22.AJ
Yes it does come off that easy, this is on my lift right now, 40 minutes to drop the entire rear to what you see in the second picture.
Well thank you for your reply. .nice shivelhesd you own. Wish mine was that simple. But it's not. I would have to remove about 90 pieces including lots of wiring to get and remove that oil tank out of the way just to get to that starter fork pin. Still brain storming this issue. I do see your point, and fully agree that would make it very simple. There was one other post. About removing my starter shaft. I am installing that shaft. And my starter fork that engages the gear into my clutch basket is my issue just need to move my oil tank about 3 inches to the right. To get that fork retainer loose so I can place that fork on that darn shaft. Another post segusted I bend the fork. Then bend it back. Any way thanks for all your suggesting. I really appreciate all your inputs.AJ
bending the fork worked for me and saved a lot of work not enough room to move the tank
Hello John thank.you for your post. Well I accomplished what I wanted to do..When I bought the 1978 Harley originally I had to do alot to the electrical system to pass the Texas state inspection. I've been working on my bike on a window maker service stand. Their was a wire harness hidden along side the left frame. Finally noticed it, moved it and that tank moved right out of the way. Just removed that screw pin. Had to soak it in penetration fluid most of the day, But waiting on some green grease, should be here Friday. Want to apply some lube on that shaft. Also need a couple new rubber shock mounts. My start solinoid that runs that starter fork was spaced with washers. After studying my maintenance manual I realized I was missing that small metal plate. Just trying to get her back together so I can ride. Thanks guys I really liked all your posts, got me to.thinking! Ya Pete, I had a Snap-on screwdriver that perfectly fit that pin. I've never been a user of impact drivers, tho I had to use my Cp 1/2 inch to get my primary clutch and my Hsrley had that compensator. On the engine drive. I learned from a dealer that it was an option offer in 1978 80c anniversary and many other Harley models that year. When I found the real issue my loose drive sprocket. And tyranny out put seal, All that oil lines were bad and my oil tank fitting that supplies oil to the oil pump was also leaking. I have an oil.cooler and there was damage to the engine bottom plate that hit both the oil lines. Glad I found that. Must have high centered something bent both forward 1/2 inch nuts. Had to cut them off. I had to address the wiring because nothing worked except the head lite. But no high beam. No turn signals about the brake lite was on all the time. Turned out the switch was installed with the clip in the back not the front of the switch. Some how it burned up contacts. The bike started on the headlite second click of the switch. I got a wire diagram for the 78 FLH 80c and had it enlarged. Open the headlite cowl and found thus mess of wires and blue clips guys use on trailer lite hook us. Must have been 30 in their. Crazy. My front brake switch was burned up and the hydraulic fitting was JB welded and leaking. Lots of issues on my Bike. I was able to get it thru the inspection after correcting all these issues. I rode the bike for five years. Just doing minor maintenance oil changes and fluid replacement. It did leak alot. But most AMFs do. That part made a mess. I used six cans of gunk spray decreased and a gallon of Alcohaul. She is nice and clean. Just hoping I've found and corrected all the oil issues. I will know that when I get her running again. Lots of grease and oil on my bottom pan that high centered. I hope the bottom case was not damaged and leaking. I did pull the engine drain plug, maybe got half a shot glass. Also my tranny out put shaft, was fine no excess play at all. It's all back.togeather. soon have a few wire issues. Any way that's fir you much needed help.AJ sorry John I called your name by mistake. Call me anything you want just don't me late fir dinner!!!!! AJ

Well Superglide how are ya! Ya a little jigging is an understatement, ln all fairness. That oil tank completely came out the right side found several bare metal spots. With corrosion so I am going to do a little clean up..also found that the rubber bushings mounts are threaded and they screw right on, learn something new. Replaced all four.with new washers. Stainless lock washers and plain nuts. After I removed that oil tank also found alot of grease and dirt.I missed in my gunk cleaning. Just hoping I can get this back together and running just as good as it ran before all this happened. AJ
