I just had fun with a similar "nothing happens" when I pushed the starter button, I had no ground wire from the starter relay to the transmission. Used my test wire with alligator clips to simulate a ground, bike started right up. Good luck.
If the solenoid contacts stick the plunger should release and the starter should only motor. Usually a low volt high amp situtation. I have had my bike keep cranking when my battery got low from cranking over to long and bendix got hung up in ring gear but that is mechanical. Also seen this problem when spacer on end of starter shaft between primary cover was left off allowing drive to come out to far and getting hung up. When it got hung up from cranking to long it would not allow the plunger to release. Just a few things Ihave witnessed in the past.
I know this is an old thread. I want to put an electric start back in my 76 fxe. It has never had one since Ive owned it. I wired my bike at 16 yoa w my own self made diagram. I dont have the breakers in the rear fender. Is there a way I can use the suggested wiring diagram for the starter?? I have a working kill switch and wires are connected to the starter button in the bars.

Here, its a stripped down factory color coded oem wiring harness for the mid year shovels. Everything works and all the correct bits are used. Top one is out of the manual.
So without factory wiring I assume I cant do the wiring with the Bosch relay to safe guard the bike from the starter sticking? Well that will cancel the deal i was making for all the starter parts I found. Guess it will be a kick only and get shoved back in the corner.

The main crcuit breaker from the positive battery side to the starter relay is 30 amp. You can use a simple 30 amp fuse to do the same thing. The other breakers are 15amp. With the stock relay, (which I use) the handlbar starter goes straight to the relay. I don't use the kill switch since I have a mag, I use this to cut off power to bike, and starter. But with mag bike still runs.

Why would you assume that? of course you can wire one in on any system factory or not. Only thing the bosch safeguards is the switch button, you want a cut out to stop the runaway you need the bigger relay in the system. Go back through this thread and read my first post, those are the reasons the solenoid hangs and the starter stays live. Fix the issue not bandaid it.
