The rear cylinder number and frame VIN are a match, but there are 4-stars on the front case near the pushrod block with no number I can see. Anyone know what the 4-star means? Thanks...

That Number you seeing on left side is Not on the rear Cylinder... it is on the Case... Moved there about 1984, from over in front of the Lifter stools.
You are right! I feel stupid. Sorry, I'm not familiar with Shovelheads. I was just trying to research and get dad's Shovelhead in a condition to sell. Thank you for saving me time! Bike is in AL and I'm in FL right now but did have a picture
Service Bulletin M-868 mentions the four stars and they appeared during the 83 model year. Engine number shifted from the R-H case to the left case below the front cylinder.
Some 84 models also had the engine number below the front cylinder but during that model year the engine number shifted to below the rear cylinder.
