Please correct if Iam wrong but the 71 and 72 superglides had 3.5 splits that I believe would have been derived from the pre 65 FL tanks without the hand shift. The super tank came in 1973 I think. Was the 65 Electaglide the first year for the fives?

If you think these are 3.5's...

I do Not...3.5 caps lay more outside ..these are flat to the top...and Like said, my friend has on original '72..
H-D Brochure of the Day call out a 5 gal fuel capacity..
Note how the 3.5 caps (FXS) lay out to the side vs Sitting flat on top...

But In the Next day or two...I will run over to my Friends and Double Check!!
There are more than a Few references to the New Superglide tank...ie New for 1974... does that mean there were None in 1973??? IDK...was Busy Then!!!
Maybe we should ask the 1971 SuperGlide club right here!!!!

The 72 superglide sales brohure for the night train lists 3.5 gallons for the split tanks. The 1971 could of coarse be different.

As best as I recall, WRs used 5 gallon tanks as far back as '39 for the long race models, sometimes referred to as "Daytona" tanks. The shape is virtually the same as the first production 5 gallon tanks on '65 Electra Glides, which were one year only tanks. They are the only 5 gallon tanks with a shut-off plunger. "66 are also one year with the petcock on the right front.

Hopefully others will correct of confirm.

Paul

71 and 72 are different tanks only because of how the emblems mount, not capacity. These tanks are referred to as 3.5 gal even if they are not exactly that capacity just like the engines aren't really 1200cc's or 1340 and the larger wideglide tanks are referred to as 5 gallons regardless of what they hold.

I’d like to see these ‘references’ please regarding the 'new' Super Glide tank for 1974.
As others have already stated, the small tank was introduced for 1973 models. And here’s a factory ad that I’ve posted before on this forum. Notice it mentions a ‘Rakish new tank’ and as you can see the bike is a 73 model and an early one at that.

Next is the front cover of Cycle magazine for Jan 73 which is another thing I’ve posted before on this forum. Again as you can see the bike is a 73 model and it too is an early one.

As for the size of 71FX tanks, here is page 9 from a confidential price list for 1971. Notice it says standard equipment for the 71FX includes 3-1/2 gallon gas tanks.
Eric

Here's an ad from 79, going by the location of the Sportster's rear master cylinder. It lists the FXE tank as having a tad more capacity than the fatbobs.

The sales brochure above is excellent info, and Yes,,,the FXEF being the same tanks as the FXS would be 3.5 gal!!
I still Recall...from memory, but I will Find it, the Brochure for 1974 claiming the Tank as New for '74...But..even if I find it...My memory is Wrong!
Thanks..Again, it is my (suspect) memory, that sees a 5 gal Tank on the first SuperGlides!!
I do Not mind being wrong...as Long as the Information ends up being absolutely Correct...
If No One Minds...I am still gonna go to my friends and Look!!
