Default Stator?

1976 FLH I am cleaning the compensator and noticed that part # 40384-70 has crimped edges in 3 places to keep contents in. When moving around the pieces inside you can hear and feel the grinding of crap between the washers, plates or springs whatever is there. Are those crimps supposed to be there, can I unbend them and clean, lubricate the pieces then reassembled and crimp? Thanks

Thanks

You can, I've pulled them apart before. Just note the way everything comes apart and be sure the crimp is even depth wise to hold things again.

The cup is simply a housing or assembly aid to contain the stack of belleville washers used to pre load the advance of the sprocket on the hub. (The ramps on the compensating sprocket assembly)

I would suggest you follow johnjzjz advice above to clean it soak in oil and put it back on.
