I had a 1976 FXE with factory primary that fit well. It had a Primo belt drive in it that was just fine for a couple of years. When the belt went I switched it back to a chain with no issues.
Thanks for the info.
Not sure whether to take a chance and buy a Zodiac primary or try and find an OEM, I don't want to
have the same problem, as aesthetically it looks awful.

That inner primary is OEM and used for 1983-1984 FLH models. It is a 9-hole primary. Just below the casting numer (behind the top edge of the chain, there should be a date code as well
1984 inner primary pic with a date code of July 11, 1983.

Thanks very much, I'll have a look tomorrow.
Thanks for the info.
Such a shame it's not a great fit.
I think I'll try and find an earlier version.
Should fit better?

I have a 1984 FXEF with a good fitting factory primary. There are a few variations of inner primarys in 1984. Mine is for front and rear chain with a wet (diaphragm) clutch. 1983 and 1984 have a lot of issues like that, belts, chain, dry and wet clutch.
If you are chain and chain with a dry clutch an earlier one should work, As stated earlier there are 8 and 9 bolt primarys too. Do some research before you jump. Post some pics of your driveline.
Thanks very much, I'll have a look tomorrow.

So apparently mine's 7/13/83
Thanks for the info, I didn't see the date.
Heres a pic of my '81 FXB Should be able to zoom in and see how a stock belt primary inner primary case fits. '81 FXB 80 ci Twin Belt 4spd Shovel
lovely bike m8, can't really zoom in enough though.
Any chance you could take a closer picture, maybe with a rule, so I can see the difference, as I did?
Im at work.... multi tasking...... Anyway the bike is in storage, its winter in Indiana USA. Here is another pic, I zoomed in for you. Transition from inner primary to case half is smooth so no need for scale to measure here.

Difficult to see with black on black, but looks like a better fit than mine.
Thanks for sharing, and once again you have a lovely bike.
Someone above had suggested your primary was for a belt application. This is a Sturgis FXB which is the primary belt drive as well as final belt drive. (Twin Belt) Ive owned 6 Harleys and still have 3. I have never seen the significant step you show in your initial picture. I have seen inner primary chrome covers that are placed on top of the inner primary outer surface. Those dont always fit well and they are like a tin shield over the outside. Is it possible you have a chrome beauty cover over your inner primary?
