I’ve always heard that but I don’t know how much to use before you hurt the engine.

After it goes back together it would be best to try to find why it is carbon'd up.
Either running pretty rich or you are burning some oil.

I've used AC Delco Top Engine Cleaner since the late 70's. Does a great job of cleaning out the carbon.

Post war cars WW2 in the 50s they were installing what was called water injection to reduce carbon and it was adjustable wing nut kind of thing

but in the 20s marvel was invented and couple oz each fill up and your good - its a combo of between carb mixture and rings seal with out a PCV valve

Problem with any "quick fix" spray with an assembled engine running is - you're washing down the cylinder walls with whatever you spray. Water is the safest cause it won't cut the oil film between piston/wall as easily, so long as you don't use a garden hose.

Since the heads are off, Easy-Off oven cleaner and a stiff fiber brush always worked for me. May look different in person, but the head doesn't look that bad, not great but not alarming... unless it's low miles since last cleaned.

Thought this was about something else.
I was going to suggest she tried whip cream or peanut butter.

If you are "washing down" the cylinders you being waaaay over aggressive ... As I mentioned earlier I've done this many many times over the years at the shop and never has a problem
