Hmmm. I’m not real sure it’s needed for a Shovel. Some of my machinists used torque plates… some didn’t. My dial bore indicator never saw a difference in a shovel… ever. I was always **** and blueprinted and documented everything when building shovels on a regular basis. I really never saw a difference. I ran a lot of 12:1 and 13:1 big bore stuff too. I never had my own to hone both ways and compare.. but I doubt there would be any difference.

Really want to do it, I’d buy a set of copper gaskets for a 3 5/8 bore then just use the torque plates for all sizes

Use a head gasket for a template, perhaps?

I deleted your post in the Engine/Mechanical section; double posting is not allowed.

I noticed this is your first post. If you plan to hang around the forum, suggest that you go to the Welcome section, introduce yourself and read the forum guidelines. I will try to move Tommy Cs reply from the duplicate post to this thread.

you only need them on Aluminium cylinders on evo & later Harleys,
they are not needed and don't do anything of Iron cylinders,
utter waste of time and money,... any Harley machine shop will tell you this...

I agree with the rest already posted, no real need of a shovel. Evo and up yes.

Actually if anything they would make things worse. Torque plates are used to take into account the distortion of the cylinder from being compressed when torquing the heads down.
On a shovelhead there is no such compression since the cylinders are torqued at the base and the heads are torqued to the top of the cylinder.

Now the shovel cylinders are all cast iron so maybe it's not possible to compress them much, but still the only thing torque plates would contribute would be distorted final bores.
