First off, I fell your pain. Mids are for little people or people that are very flexible. I do not understand the current chopper kids with the super high mids, not for me at all. And they look ridiculous riding their bikes!??!?!
Highway pegs are fine just to find out if it makes a difference for you. I rode with mids and highway pegs on my Sporty forever, just because I was young and poor. A bunch of years ago I scored a perfect used set of factory forwards in polished aluminum, put them on and fell in love with the bike again. Cannot imagine going back to mids, Super Glided, FXR or anything else.
Do what you gotta do to RIDE the bike. Only nuts and bolts, can always go back. The guy who says something to you, will likely be 5'-6" or shorter.
I wasn't sure I would like the look of the WG controls on the bike but I do and I like that it opened up the area between the engine and transmission. Looks less cluttered.
The bike had a chrome horn bracket on it when I got the bike so I bought an NOS bracket with setscrew to replace it. Silly me, I should've looked behind the mid controls first. Complete with set screw!

Yes they do look ridiculous. Mids are trendy, but forward controls are much more comfortable and do not keep you from riding aggressively.
