I have an 84' FXST that was running and starting (when using electric start) as it should until I tried to kick start it. When trying to kick it, the kicker would jam and not return properly. I finally got the kicker to return but now when I try elec. start it clicks and you can hear something struggling to turn.
1. disconnect battery
2. take trans side cover off and see why kicker misbehaved and repair.
3. When you try electric, did the lights go really dim?
get prepared to remove primary cover , starter and solenoid

You could try putting it in gear and rocking it back and forth to see if that frees it up, but even if it does you still need to go in and see what happened.
