71 kicker no spark
Scooter
the battery seems to be fine, i have lights, shes a kicker only, so not sure if i can test coil for volts easily. when she died on me we it was as if i turned her off, she kicked over once and ran about 20 seconds then nothing. it doesnt have any spark when i kick her no. i have never had a magneto and not sure where to start.
A 1971 shovelhead has a set of points and condensor,(if it has the stock setup).
Am I correct in assuming that it's a shovelhead we are dealing with?

yes shes a shovel and i was told that she would kick over without the battery
Two questions. Does it have a two post coil on the left side just behind the rear head?
If so it probably doesn't have a magneto.
Have you had the points cover off of the right side, or is there some big thing sticking out of it?
Take the two screws out of the points cover and if there is a set of points and condensor in there, then it's a points system.
If it still has points it should be a fairly simple fix. If some one has stuck a magneto in there then it could get a bit more tricky. If it is a true magneto, then you are correct in thinking it doesn't need a battery.
If it's a points system, it will be easier to fix but you will need a battery for sure.
I'm not meaning to sound rude, I just need to know exactly what you have, not what someone thinks you have.

thanks for hanging in there with me i had a case of the dumb-*** going on. yes she does have the points system and no there is no magneto. I changed out the points (.18)and still nothing it does have a 2 post coil, iwill pick up a new battery today and give that a shot. i guess after that the coil????
If no fire to the coil then you need to backtrack to the switch, check for good connections at the battery. There should be a 30 amp circuit breaker at the positive side of the battery, this powers pretty much everything on the bike except for the main lug on the starter.
If all that checks out then see if you actually have voltage on the points. Hook test light to ground and touch the test light to the wire hookup on the points. There should be test light on when the points are open and off when they are closed.
If no voltage at the points and you have voltage on the top terminal of the coil, then disconnect the points wire and check to see if you have voltage on the bottom of the coil. If you have voltage at the bottom of the coil but not at the points hookup wire, then the wire going to the points is open somewhere.
If no volts on bottom of the coil with the points wire disconnected, then the coil is most likely the problem.
If the battery willrun the headlight brightly and blows the horn nice and loud, then it has enough juice to start a kick only bike.
Don't feel dumb about the magneto thing either, you're just learning about the bike.
All is cool.
