Default Oil pump ball bearing residue??

1980 FXWG I just pulled the ball beraing out of my oil pump.

There were 3 pieces of something on top of the ball. Put

together, they would be about the size of the hole. These

do not look like oil or metal shavings. They are the consistency

of thin metal or plastic. I don't see anything like a plastic

or metal washer in my parts books. Anyone have any ideas.

Don't know what that could be John if you are referring to the check ball in the oil pump- should only be a ball, spring washer to seal the screw and thats it as far as I know.
Good thing you got it cleaned out. I would suggest checking and cleaning the pressure relief valve and if you have your oil drain out of the oil bag give it a good look inside and flush it out, You may also want to go to the trouble of removing the right side cover off your engine case and take a look in there as well.
On my generator engine there is also a screen under a plug just in front of the oil pump that should be checked too if your engine has some thing like that.
When I rebuilt my 68 I found real crusty residue in those passages but nothing solid like you are describing. I would sure want to find out what it was and where it came from.

you are talking about the check ball in the oil pump?

there should be a screen a spring to come out before the check ball. replace the screen if it does not look in mint condition.

sometimes dudes put the screen in upside down and damage it. the cam breather (under the cone) can be made of plastic. sometimes these get buggered up and you will find plastic.

let me know how you made out.

The last owner might have been trying to put additional pressure on top of the ball bearing with a plastic wafer of some sort Trying to keep the oil from going into the bottom end when sitting Just a thought

Thanks for replies guys. Had time to get in there today.

It was some type of metal sheet. I don't know why it was put

in. I thought it might be some type of, old skool idea, not in

the books. LOL I guess this is part of the fun owning older bikes.

You never know what you will find. Thanks again for the replies.
