My buddies 76 FXE Superglide (stock) with points removed and replaced with electronic ignition is running good but will miss at times and sound like a pop. He said he messed with the carb (brand new stock Keihin) but to no avail. He hadn't rode the bike in 25 years before he did the S&S oil pump, carb and ingnition. My sugestion was to check the mechanical advance and see if was clean and workin, after all 25 years in storage in a shed is a long time. Any help is appreciated.
warpigs, What are the operating conditions when it misfires? RPM, engine warmed up or cold, accelerating/decelerating/cruising along, fresh fuel in the tank, popping out the carb or exhaust, you know, that kind of info. His electronic ignition still uses the mechanical advance weights? If it does, getting in there and cleaning, lubing and installing brand new advance weight springs sure couldn't hurt. I highly recommend installing new springs and lube every tune up.
He said the bike starts right up no problem, and he said when cold 2 to 3 kicks will kick it over if using the kicker. He said it'll do it even when fully warmed, but said it overall runs good just can't solve the intermittet miss.
As the other poster said, I wouild get the mechanical weights out and make sure they are lubed. I alwys used anti-sieze. Check intake seals. You could spray a little carb cleaner or water on the seals see if you hear any different. Those o-rings after a long time get real solid. Dump the bowl a few times. it gets like fishfood looking stuff in there. Petcock filter. Take a look witha flashlight. Many factory tanks rust inside.
does it happen when he's on the gas hard for a bit? if so, maybe check for lack of available fuel coming into the carb(low fuel flow) which can be caused by improperly vented tanks or plugged fuel filter. Just an idea, since we don't know any specifics on the symptom.
