In '95 I did a total rebuild of my 80 FLH. At the Kansas City swap meet I bought a Sturgis rear belt set-up. It had the wider swing arm, both pulleys, and inner primary. I had to add a few pieces like a different starter. I love it. No problems with too much oil leakage if careful when sealing primary. Sturgis inner was not made to hold oil. One year I tried the belt inner primary. One year is about as long as I used it. I was never happy with the clutch action or the fact that I had to pull out the clutch hub and grease the bearings periodically.

Primary belt drive rules - Vent it. Venting off the heat will allow the belt to last a very long time. Learned via 160,00+ miles on a Primo belted Shovel with 2 belts. First one lasted about 30 - 40k miles. I then vented the primary for the second one.

The ONLY time my shovel ever brokedown was when my belt drive primary let go. I tossed it and put my chain drive back in. I have never had a chain failure ever. There is no advantage to a belt, they are not any smoother or quieter running than a properly adjusted chain. If you do go with the belt I recommend you keep your chain and sprockets.

My 76 shovel has a BDL primary belt , chain on the rear.I've had no trouble what so ever with it.My inspection and derby covers are both the vented type.Other than being a litte noisy when you pull in the clutch,it works fine.I think the noise was always there, but with vented cover you can hear it easier.

If belt inner primary's are installed properly they will go on for miles The secret is the proper belt tension and ventilation You have to commit the inner primary to the belt set up like have a machinist remove the inner ring that the O ring seals the oil in on chain prim drives Elongate the 4 holes that hold the inner prim to the engine These procedures allow you to adjust the belt for 3/4 to 1 in play (cold ) at the center Only use 8mm belt drives with no tensioners I have 2 bikes with over 40K miles (orig belts ) If you like to do burnouts stay with the chain prim !
