When do you know when the valves are going bad. Both exaust and intake. And what does it mean when an exaust valve is white. Just trying to see if i need to do a valve job.Any suggestions or answers will be greatley appreciated.
there bad when there isnt enough metal to machine a new seat on them, kinda like you rotors or brake drums on you car or truck. today gas burns a lot different than the old days so white might mean perfect. seems little lean to me but i could be wrong, i have had my heads off, but my plugs are light grey.
first check to see if their bent,cracked,45 degree pitted or otherwise damaged.then check valve protrusion, this will give condition of seats, also check seats for pitting, then check the valve margin, this is the amout of the actual amount between the top of the valve & the 45 degree, should be atleast .080.then with the valves installed turn head over and fill with liquid, see if any seeps into ports,
I do not know if the head is on or off so - if the engine is still together you can use a cylinder leak down test - if the heads are off you can turn the head upside down, pour some gas over the valves to form a puddle over them and see if it leaks down.
I think im fixing to do the top end. Need some advice. Can I get the complete valve set up springs, seals seat etc before I tear it apart or what order do I do this. as far as valve job, pistons etc. Can i use a differant cam and piston with out messing with the flywheel to get any more power or durability. Never done this before, but im not an idiot pretty mechanicaly inclined. just dont the order of the process as far as what to get when etc. can anybody give me some pointers.
the first thought that comes to my mind when there is talk of increasing power on an older model, is how long has the current lower end been operating
if it is well into its life, either do it as well, or think again
more pressure on top will certainly reveal any weaknesses below
If you think that the crank is up to it, and that vibration etc is fine right now, then try to use pistons that are similar in weight to what you are currently using
Black Diamond(kibblewhite) are good for valves etc, I think
But you most likely have no idea as to what is in there, and could buy parts that do not fit, as there are many variations in valve head, valve stem, etc, and changes might have been made
you really need to pull down first and then make a plan
