I have a 77 Ironhead that has recently started smoking from the rear cylinder when I first start it in the morning. If I leave it sit for a couple of days it puts out a nice blue cloud of smoke and continues to smoke for the first 30 seconds it's running. Once she's running I only get a little smoke after I crack the throttle on it. I'm thinking maybe a valve guide or seat is going on it. I'm going to tear it down today but any insight would be appreciated.
Run a compression and leak down check. See Mick's comments about how to do the tests.
If the compression comes up when you do the leak down part of the test, then you may have a ring problem. If it stays the same, then normally, you can expect the problem to be with a valve, with the exhaust being the normal culprit.
well you figured it out on your own. valve guide and seal. if you pull the head youll be able to check the valve guide play and mine as well re-ring it. i did my old sporty that way, it was smoking real bad.
