Default 25th gear

I bought a 72 FLH about a month ago it felt a little slugish and had a fadeing lose of power going up hill ihave since did a run thru and tune up as per the manule and all checks out good .starts great. runs great.so after reading a post about gearing I thought I would give them a check and found a 25 th drive and 51 at the wheel and I was thinking their lays the problem I want to ride 60 to 70 with a passenger with out that lose of up hill power so 24 or 23 th that is the question.any help would be great

Wow! 25 tooth trany sprocket? Dont know f ive ever seen such a monster. Seems like it would rub on the top (return side) of inner primary. 23 or 24 would def. help. 23 t would net you 2800 rpms @60mph. However, thats when the old shovels start to really buzz your hands and a few other body parts. Its a tough trade off between power and higher cruseing speeds with only 4 gears. I ran 25 tooth on the front 48 tooth on the back it flys it's sill got great take off I get 60km first gear 90km second 130km in third 180km in top gear.I have a1984 FLH box in my 79 lowrider it help to have a 93ci motor.I don't ride like is all ways I like my licence

The standard sprocket on FL and FLH models was a 22 tooth as I recall.
It was that way because it was expected that the bike would have the weight of the bags and fairing for touring.
Regardless of what was stock, if you want great acceleration around town and the ability to pull hills loaded down with touring stuff, try a 22 tooth.

I have 23 front and 47 rear, puts me at around 3k at 70 mph on my FLH and 23/48 on my FXS
