Default '76 Shovelhead clutch slippage at speed.

My '76 Shovelhead's clutch slips only in the higher rev range. I am inexperienced but have improved the situation some by adjusting the clutch cable. I am open to all suggestions as I readily understand that though trial and error can work, it usually takes longer and the "right" way is generally the easier way. Thanks for your time and God bless!

P.S. Found a vid on Youtube that shows how to adjust clutch cable and clutch plate but it's on a late model Harley so I didn't know if it was the same?

Shovel clutch is totally different from later ones. Try tightening the hub nuts (the small ones, 3 or 5 depending on what hub you have) half a turn at a time and see if it helps. You just want enough tension so the clutch doesn't slip, but it still releases. They can be touchy to get set up right. Are your fiber discs in good shape? Do you have a service manual? JMHO, YMMV, etc.

I'd try to turn in the nuts on the clutch pressure plate inside the dome cover. On my "75 FLH the pressure plate is 1&1/32" away from the plate holding the springs in. If the springs are too compressed and that doesn't work you probably need new plates. Follow the instructions in your manual if the "quick fix" above doesn't work. It's a longer process but works if your clutch disks are good.

Thanks. Will be trying the "quick fix" this afternoon. I do have 2 manuals for her and will refer to them if this doesn't work. Thanks again guys!

Me, I read the manual first.

Whatever. Everybody's right that tightening the three or five nuts on the pressure plate should have helped/resolved problem.

If you check back on this thread, let us know.

Adjusted the clutch plates and cable and all is well now. Thanks again for the time, patience, and experience.
