I would suggest a rebuilt CV carb, jetted specifically for the shovel; sealing the primary from the main oil system; replacing all top-end gaskets and going through the proper retorque process (heat cycle, retorque); electronic ignition (Crane Hi-4 or Twin-Tech); and VOES.
If you are rebuilding the motor completely be sure to double check any clearances you can. Some of the problems with Shovels is that many parts didn't match up correctly. Any covers make sure they are flat and true. And most of all, take your time. Anytime I have issues with a build is because I got short on time and wanted to get done fast! Good Luck and let us know if we can help with parts, service manuals, or anything else.
real good topic, talkin on the shovel exhaust, my 72 has been heli- coiled, two times, and my 74 when i got it,the back exhaust had ran loose, beatin up the ulunimum pretty good. the lock stud works real well and shark teeth clamps help, one other thing if you have'nt heard, this is a fix,did it to both bike and no more loose or leakin, put a good gasket on then get you some early style evo gaskets. there shaped like a big asbestes ring, there about one quarter inch tall, slip that down over the stock gasket, its tight but slide that puppy on down, as you tighten, push in on the pipe, helping the evo gasket smash evenly and thats that, it fills the void and keeps it tight,i will return you back to forum now!
i have a 72 flh, put on a S&S super E and a dyna S ignition. it starts evrytime and i havnt had to do a thing to it but ride, and replaced a lead acid batt once, for the last 10 years..
Best thing i've done to my 77 fxe was a Daytona twin tec electronic ignition,s+s super E carb. And sealed off the primary to get some extra life out of the valve train!
would an top end oiler kit be a good investment, and also changing lifters, pushrods, and rockers?
What type of lifters does she have now? I would suggest not going wild about replacing things right off of the bat. What's there may be a good setup. I would just suggest replacing gaskets/seals and other leak sources, get her running and see how it goes. Which '82 model do you have?
