My 79 Lowrider starts easily, idles OK, accelerates fine. But when cruising at steady speeds, it starts missing. I have rebuilt the Keihein carb and checked for manifold leaks to no avail. All I can figure is that the carb has a problem. Anybody have any ideas?

Air leak at the manifold or float setting is off if you didn't change the jets , good luck .
For what it's worth, if you run long pipes it can make it very difficult to tune the carb and cause those coughs at cruise as well. I run a CV carb but have 30" fishtail extensions for the "look" I want, and it was the hardest bike I've ever dialed in. I still get coughs at cruise or while coasting down inclines... #@!@#!!
On my bike I have an SU with an elbow manifold so I had to drop the float height so the overflow wouldn't leak fuel all over my magneto when the bike was on it's side stand. Every now and then I'll get a cough while cruising on the highway. Such is life with a custom scooter.

Shovels do not like weird pipes and can be a real pain with some carb combos with them , been a few through here I wouldn't touch because of the owner and the goofy pipes he just had to have , you'll never get her completely clean running with those just a heads up .

I agree Twizted. Was thinking about trying the old "thumbscrew" trick tonight a few inches inside the extensions to see if that would give me some backpressure. If not, I might start looking for a Thunderheader or other 2-1 that will clear my floorboards...
You find a trick or something that works please post up the results , I've spent untold hours and gone through all kinds of gyrations trying to get long pipes to run with little success .
