Hey everyone. My name is Tim,Im from Western Pa and new to this site.I have a question.Im not really new to Harleys but I havent owned one for about 8 years.I just bought a 1980 wide glide a couple of weeks ago. When I bought it the tanks were off and needed the inside redone,it needed a new primary chain and a few other small things to get it running. The guy I bought it from said the top end was rebuit (but hasn't ran it since the rebuild)and a rebuilt tranz.I believe the work was done like he said.Well I got it all painted and put back together and got it running the other day.I had it out for a couple of short rides,So today I took it on about a 3mile ride and noticed alot of smoke comming from the rear jug.Could there be a reason for the smoke other than bad rings. There is no starter on the bike and its real hard to kick start(it has been since I tried starting it for the first time)Any help will be appriciated. Thanks
Could be a number of things and not all of them bad . If the top end is fresh with no miles it will smoke for a while till the rings seat say a couple hundred miles . If it keeps it up and the plugs ,tops of the pistons and the insides of the intake and exhaust ports look oily they probably didn't put in guide seals or they screwed them up installing them . Run it for a while see what happens and keep us posted .
If this shovel is running valve guide seals I've taken several apart over the years and found the seals had come off the guide Those seals are kind of tricky on the fit on the guide
Well its not too bad.I took the head off to find a blown head gasket.I also found the the heads were ported and had alot of good work done to them. Thanks for the help.
Get the new metal wafer gaskets , bit pricey but they kill all the bullshit oil leaks on the upper end permanent no more rocker box or base gaskets going out every 18 months . Best part only thing you have re-torque is the head gaskets
