Default Noisy Brakes

Hey i got a 1980 FXWG it has the standard twin disc setup and im getting some bizarre noises from the calipers ! it sounds like someone is poking the spokes of the front wheel with a stick ! as i slowly pull the brake lever the noise stops and then will resume as the lever is released . After 10 or so miles it stops and is ok it has new pads fitted a week ago and there is nothing obvious or lose any ideas ! ? thanks

Well there are 4 bolts and two pins for the calipers on banana calipers. I am thinking one of the pins (probably upper) might not be seated in the slot and basically bouncing off the top of the disc.

Only other thought is that the anti-rattle shim on the piston side did not get installed properly.

Only way to determine is to pull, separate and check.

For your own safety I would not ride it until you pull the calipers, inspect and re-install.

Mounting pins and the bushing in the legs are worn and they will rattle like crazy , I ran one of those fronts for years . You can try and do a rebuild or do what I did . Find a chunk of the thick dense plastic foam and make a small strip and on the upper mount jam it in between the leg and the caliper to act like a fake rattle spring . Those small front duels didn't have any . If nothing else try it and see if the noise goes away , tell you if that's the problem or not

Cool chaps thanks for the advice it already has foam between the leg and the caliper but it looks like it has been fitted for some time ( previous owner ) so will replace it and see going to strip it down tomorrow and check it out will post the outcome thanks again for the input

There are rebuild kits available for the caliper mounts. I'm pretty sure V-Twin has them. As far as the squeaking, try dabbing some comet cleanser on your rotor. The ride the bike and slowly apply the breaks. The Comet will cut the glaze and it'll be fine after that.

GMA makes a direct replacement set for those and I see them on Ebay pretty regular . If you have access to get some machining done you can pick up a set of Brembo calipers off Ducaties or BMW's also off ebay very reasonable and do a conversion . Takes a bit of work but the results are well worth it , add a decent progressive spring kit and that front end perks right up for your roads over there .

Rear you can adapt almost any later model 11-1/2" rotor & brake caliper very easy and there several aftermarket brands available , again GMA makes a good direct easy bolt on kit for your bike . I've used both for your bike configuration with great results . Just be sure which rotor size you have 10" or the later 11-1/2" before ordering .

Cool thanks for the input may have a billet 6 pot lined up for the rear as for the fronts will look into your suggestions it can be difficult to get spares for brembo brakes in the uk as they seem now to want the units returned to them for repair rather than supply spares which obviously is a pain in the **** as it means waiting possibly weeks to get them back rather than days for parts to arrive ! cheers Also can you provide me with a link for GMA cant find them !
