Well gents got another question for you ! can any one tell me what the standard sprockets for a 1980 FXWG ? . It currently has a 23 tooth gear box sprocket and a 48 tooth rear , i think the gear box sprocket is the original one but not the rear . Many thanks

They make oem sprockets in 48,49,51 tooth sprockets. I believe and could be wrong but think 48 is the standard for that year and model

Those sprockets you have are going to make it tall geared. That means lower RPM than stock when in gear and cruzing. You may not have any problem but if it seem like it's lugging, no power going up hills or you have to use alot of clutch to get started from a stop, you should increase the rear sprocket size. If you aint having problems, leave it alone!! Your engine will determine what you need to do.

The rear chain may have been shortened when the 48 tooth sprocket was installed so you very possibly will have to replace your rear chain when you go to the 51 tooth sprocket. I believe it requires a 102 link chain for your bike with stock 23/51 gearing. The shop manual will tell you what it should be.

Well thought i should update as you gents were good enough to give me your input ! i have put the 51 tooth rear sprocket back on with no problems with chain length it all went back fine, initially i havnt noticed any great differences but living were i do on an island which is currently rammed with bloody holiday makers ! and with one decent stretch of road i guess i need a trip to the mainland to be sure the change i have made is a positive one thanks again

If I remember my time there correctly you need low end and shifting gears not much in the long highways for top end running anyway .

Default sprockets

stock is 24 -- 23 --51 -- best is 24 --22 -- 48 if you run a belt drive in the primary its like a 23 1/2 engine -- so belt drive -- 22 -- 47 -- these work best if you have a close ratio 3rd gear.. normal driving is 1st to 20mph then 2nd to 30mph then shift into 3rd @ 40.. if you buzzing down a street that has a 35mph speed limit stay in 3rd.. the slightly higher rpms in 3rd is better than lugging the engine in 4th... i also use the rollerskate chain tensioner.. amazing item...
