Think I would go from least to most...

Pull primary, inspect and clean plates and reset adjustments according to manual

Inspect shift linkage for wear and replace any worn or grooved parts and readjust as required

Pull cowpie top and look for worn out parts

Inspect shift forks/gears and look for worn out parts and replace as needed

If your shift linkage components are not worn, then it is time to pull the top and inspect your shift cam and pawl carrier. There are also some springs that could be worn out and need replacing.

Most likely it's the linkage , they where loose as a dock side ***** from the factory . If not look at the little plate where the shaft for linkage arm comes through on the top , it's the shift pawl / carrier and those do break and it will do exactly your describing . Good luck bud .

The primary's have to come off and you can get to that little cover if that's the problem but look at the bright side once it's off you can simplify and strengthen the linkage . they have steel replacement arm for it that works real well and you take about half the crap out by going direct from shift arm to the lever on the trans .

Get a good light and an inspection mirror on the little wands and go hunting for the leak & cracks on the lid .

the shift arm on the cow pie is aluminum - the bushing is steel - it wears FAST even though it has a grease fitting it gets over looked ----this one is steel and on ebay ---- http://www.ebay.com/itm/79-85-SHOVEL...6e867b&vxp=mtr --- i have one and its been problem free for over 2 years -- also if you dont have the linkage adjusted right it will jam -- heres a pic of the linkage i make -- the stamped steel link is junk, junk, junk -- i also add grease fittings to all of them-- hell i even have a grease fitting for my clutch lever
