Could you explain this a bit more? What makes them so odd ?
Transition years , factory was swinging away from the AMF format , had all kinda issues with parts from change over in manufacturing processes & suppliers , a lot of mixing and matching went on in 78 into 79 . Bikes listed as 80" where found to be 74" internals , bad machining runs on engine parts like heads & cylinders . Basically harley was going to a new up dated engine & drive train so towards mid year 78 into 79 they where throwing them together with whatever was on the shelf to deplete the old stock .
Don't get me wrong there was some solid machines put out also but it's a dice shoot till you open one up and see what's inside .
Don't let it put you off if the price is right , think about like this the shovels been around long enough ALL the issues are well known and there's repairs or updates for everyone of them and most are more time than money . And don't care what other's are saying the prices will only continue to go up and clean older stock bikes aren't that common .
De bugged and well tuned a shovel is a thing of beauty and all of it will look bone OEM stock from the outside . They are a head turner at any bike event anymore stock , mine draws attention like flies to watermelon
Thanks to all. Ya I know some pic will help ya ill work on that. She's got a little over 15 k on her. I need to find a collector who wants a cherry FXE. THe only mid year major change I'm aware of is electronic ignition module, last year of kick start also.
Absolutely correct on the rattling levers, lots of vibration, part. They are a breed of their own. Last year AMF owned them

I was thinking ignition, rachet to turtle top transmission, and 74 to 80 engine.
The attached picture is from around 1982(My Dad's bike). It is a 78 FXE, Sure it close to what yours looks like. I have it in my garage, working on it.

As TwiZted says "De bugged and well tuned a shovel is a thing of beauty and all of it will look bone OEM stock from the outside . Yeah the stock tank holds 3.5 .gallons US. It doesn't have a peanut tank link a Sportster it's more like a ugly watermelon. I looked it up today on NADA puts an excellent one at $11,605 while KBB Says $5815 so it's somewhere in there. I know I would not part with it for under $10,000 she's to fun to look at.
My issue is getting her through emissions in AZ. It has the original lead head valves and seats, I could never see replacing them till the valves or seats went out, nether have. But emissions are tough according to everyone I've talked to. I don't have the money to
Put into her know to make the state happy. No I have not tried yet, but in AZ once
You start you have to finish.......
is emission the same for newer and olderbikes?
That would be crazy...
Even in Italy (where I come from) they use different values depending on the year of the bike.
@ Big Lots the have this bottlecalled EMISSION PASSor something like that for 7$...not sure what it does though....
Otherwise I know there is a specific % of ACETONE you can add to your gas to lower emissions temporarely... once you are done you just emptly your tank and put fresh gas.
Emissions values will also change depending on the exhaust and timing.
