stator question

stator question
our 1970 flh is not charging. I noticed we have 2 wires off the regulator, red and black. the red is grounded and the black is going to batt poss, seems backwards. I pulled the plug out of the case, engine running, one terminal is grounded, one has 2 volts, one 8 volts and one 25 volts (all ac). I'm guessing the 3 should all be 25 or so volts? we are already battling no oil pressure, and if this is a stator issue, as it seems it probably is, I think we're just going to give up on her

the 4 wire stator was junk then and its still the same today / except its 5 times more expensive to buy
converting it to a later 2 wire is a smart deal and cheaper --
But you might be correct / stop now cut your losses and buy a better one if thats what he wants

1970...why give up? Parts do wear out over time, especially electrical. Replace using Cycle Electrical components, a bit pricey but American made.

i'll keep the 2 wire in mind if we keep going, johnjzjz. thanks. panz4ever, I have a LONG post going over oil pressure issue. he just doesn't have the dough to keep going. johnjzjz, as a side note, I installed a .090" restrictor in pinion, no change in pressure. thanks y'all

You can pick up a 32amp later model stator kit & regulator for under $140 easy , last one I did for someone was $119 off ebay and they are a direct bolt in . Seriously for most shovel guys this is 2 weeks cigarettes & beer money .........................
