Do you have a meter? you need to check for 12 volts at coil and then on terminal 3 on the starter relay when start button is depressed. Check terminal1 while your there. ( it should be hot all the time)
Before I tear into it..
I assume there is a wire at the 'Run/off' switch that powers both the START switch as well as power to the coil to run..
Might there be a fuse or breaker upstream of this that has slef reset capabilities??
The fact that this is an issue that corrects itself after a time delay??..A full short would stay that way..or cause burns,etc..??..no?
I'm thinking of a supply of power to the control switches that feed BOTH ignition AND start button..since both of these are failing..and resetiing after a while.
Weak breaker??..fuse?
And nothing else loses power on bike when it happens..lights,console,etc maintain.
Just the ignition and start button.,...until I leave it sit a few minutes...and the longer I leave it sit..the longer it runs before it all cuts out.
You guys have been great!
Jim
Seems reasonable, but the Harley wiring schematic shows that the neutral light is fed from that self resetting breaker. So if that wiring is still original and the neutral light glows then voltage should be present at the coil and start button. Would like to know what electronic ignition was installed then maybe we can see where it may affect wiring.
Well...took the right cover off and lo and behold..the grey wire going to the start button was hanging on by a strand...held the wire to the switch pole and it fired right up.
Going to replace the control switches nd wires and avoid any messy soldering..
Grateful for your help.
Let me know if anyone might be interested in a real nice Shovel...
I'm thinking of selling one day.
if it has OEM switches and your dead set on replacing them - as they are the best money can buy - i would be interested in buying the original switches NOT the china crap they sell today -- that is if your interested in selling them -- your welcome - jz
You liking the way people stop and do a double take on your bike ? Something a shovel will do every time a twinkie can't and that's draw attention standing still
Only the right kind of people do a double take and look back..
I'm surprised at the young kids who know its something else...as they tug on their moms to say hey look at that!!!
What kills me is the cops riding Hondas and kawasakis....
Ride safe man..
