I have had 'er for some 29 years, always under the assumption the generator does not put out as much as a new alternator (67fl). Now I am questioning that? 65A means 65 amp output? I am spoiled now to my gerbings on my other one (2007 FLSTSC), and Just got back from a couple thousand mile triop on the old un and missed it as we hit low 40's! Any input from you guys?
in 1965 the motor company came into the 20th century and went 12 volts on all the big bikes
the number you have is the style / and the first year of use of gen the 65A, and its the second type to come from harley as the first was 1965 ( 65 ) and the first time to have 12 volts
harleys system back in the day and even still today with some stuff is the last two numbers would be the first time the part was used and the letters are the up dates, A first B second up date and then they change the number it is a bit confusing -- but that is it what the numbers means - the gen is only 11 amps in 12 volt style
I KNEW better, I just couldn't wrap my head around it at the time I posted! It always was wired with a toggle even for the spots, so either or, and I just assumed it was because of Amps. What brought this up in my thoughts was that I just ordered a cycle electric for it. I heard they are the best? I really hesitated as I do not like that heat sink electronic VR on the end. but.. I ride it a lot, it isn't a show only. It has not come in yet so I haven't seen the instructions, but I "hear" there are just two posts (like the old F/A ones) but they are NOT F/A, and there is no flashing now. Anyone have experience with these?
I am pretty confident I wired it all right, hope I like it as it was NOT a quick swap and will be just as hard if not harder to put back the mechanical regulator etc. I sure don't remember taking those gears off the old generator before putting it in. Maybe they came with 'em years ago? I probably have done that (just a swap) some 4 times or so.. I guess my memory is worse than I thought! Anyone know how those gears come off? I pried but soft as I was not sure....
