I had the same problem on my 1984 FXE shovel. It ran well in the summer but sat a couple months into the fall, no compression. I heated the tappet blocks with a heat gun till good and warm, then tried kicking - wa la compression.. Turned the gas on and hit the button it started and ran like before. I'm guessing the oil was cold and thick and the valve spring pressure wasn't enough to push the lifters down quick enough.
This thread makes no sense..
loosen your pushrods to the point they want to fall out then do a compression test. 0psi-5psi? that's a LOT of lost compression, you should be hearing it come from somewhere..
blown head gasket, bent valve.. idk, do some playing and get back to us.
Id suggest adjusting the valves. Id guess the dipstick issue is from sumping, I wouldn't worry about that yet. First id get the compression to where it will run.
