I've read a few threads on this topic but have unanswered questions regarding this swap. From what I've read and understand to be true(maybe not), all Softail variants (of the same vintage) share a common frame with 32* (steering head) rake. Focusing now specifically on the FLSTF and FXSTC: the FLSTF has a Fork Angle of 32* (neutral or parallel to the steering head) and the FXSTC has a Fork Angle of 33.5* (+1.5* rake). Given both bikes run the wide glide with 41.3mm forks (unless there is an offset or some other difference in the triple tree that I'm unaware of), if a person were to run the FXSTC triple tree with all remaining components being FLSTF (fork tubes, sliders, fender, wheel, rotor, brake caliper) wouldn't that be equivalent to putting a 1.5* raked triple tree on a FLSTF? And if the donor was of the same year group, wouldn't the caliper also be the same?
I want to do this swap for many reasons, probably the most notable is the my FXSTC is very low mileage and I know it very well. There is nothing wrong with it and rather than go through the HASSLE of trading it in on an FLSTF Id prefer to keep what I have and know...I like paid off.
Kindly, advise on selling/trading I don't need. Advise on making the swap a reality would be greatly appreciated. Can anyone tell me if there is a difference in the two triple trees besides the 1.5* rake?
There are a few differences in fx trees vs fl trees. The lower trees have mounts for the cow bells and the nacelle. The top tree has mounts as well. The lower tree is ugly without the cover.
Very good information. I figured if there was a difference besides the rake it would have something to do with mounting the tins. To verify that, I ordered a set from eBay yesterday thinking I'd test it. Oh well, I'll have to have them anyway. Thanks for the help.
So with the information STAL94GT has provided, I guess my follow on question would be...any recommendations on what year group FLSTF should I look at getting for the conversion?
Also fl fork tubes are 2 inches shorter. You can run a set of progressive drop in springs to bring them down to the right height. You may be able to use the lower legs if they can fit inside the cow bells. I never tried to do that cause I bought the lower legs.
