Have been in Sturgis in '12. But the week after the rally. What a place! The Black Hills are the most amazing roads a biker can experience. Hwy 87, called the Needle Hwy is just breathtaking.
I liked the Needles, but wife thought the rock walls were closing in on her. LOL
She was fine riding Iron Mountain road though.
I actually like Iron Mountain better too, but there is a lot more traffic.
We are in Spearfish now. Did Devil's Tower today, and will ride to Crazy Horse and Mt. Rushmore tomorrow.
Will be skipping the Needles, but will hit Iron Mountain road.
We'll be riding out of Columbus, OH on Friday, arriving at the Chip on Sunday. The lady and I are riding our bikes, and a non-riding lady friend will be following along in the truck for our support vehicle (she'll be spending time on the back of my bike while we're out there).
If anybody is at the Chip, feel free to come by my campsite for a beverage or 3 in the evening hours!
Okay lets go! Checked/torqued most necessary bolts, tire pressure 42/38, new Commander II tires front/rear, changed engine oil, trans, primary, washed and waxed, bags half packed (waiting on by better half) have the rain gear on top! Installed new spark plugs (not that necessary but why not they’re cheap. Added a couple of turns to the shocks, mounted Gopro holder, not the one I wanted, but I bet I can find lots of them at Sturgis and Rapid City Harley; ordered one online, Chinese junk, trashed. Route to Hill City and from Rapid City added to GPS. I’m ready, let’s do it again!
Have cabin at a campground in Hill City for three days, then off to a great hotel in Rapid City for five days. Hotel provides bike wash area, hot breakfast in the morning and something different each afternoon; beer and chips one day, hot dogs and hamburgers the next, ice cream and cake, popcorn and beer... very nice. After all they should for what it cost to stay there, but that king size bed and a/c really feels good after a long day of riding.
On I-90 right now heading west about 100 miles out of Rapid. Staying at Glencoe. Seeing more bikes heading east than we are heading towards Sturgis. Almost like we're a week late.
