After reading the posts about the FXR I think I will go with the softail or a custom frame. I would hate to destroy a potential classic by altering it's best quality ie: the frame.

Thanks for all of the opinions.

If you want to stand out from the the crowd, definitely go with the FXR. Parts are still available but require some searching.
I bought one for a winter project last year. Returned it to stock condition. (More valuable IMO )
Not 100 percent done but pretty close.
I love it!

Thanks!
All they would need to do is modify the neck on a current Rushmore frame, replace the tins, install a narrow glide front end and voila... new age FXR!
O.K. , may not that simple, but it could be done. I would be first on line to buy one!

And I would be the second. I am considering picking up an FXR myself.

I am partial to the fxr. The below fxr, which I bought new in 1992 is the bike on which I have ridden more miles then any other bike I've owned, about 125,000 at this point. The engine has still not had any real work (except for a bad lifter, of course). It runs just fine. I'm going to bring it in for a major servicing and new tires next week. If I wanted, I would feel comfortable riding it coast to coast, it still runs that well. About 78 mph the engine just smooths out and from there up to the mid 90's it is in it's own. It has only had a stage one upgrade. I have a newer Switchback for all my major riding now a days, but this is THE bike of my life. Listening to how many of you regretted selling your fxr, I decided to keep this one till I die. So I would def recommend the fxr.

A proper FXR build would leave the frame untouched. Ohlins remote reservoir shocks in back, beefy inverted forks off a liter-class sportbike up front (will require custom trees), something to stiffen the swingarm mounting, etc.

A Softie can be built into a traditional Harley look. An FXR is a street racer.
Set up like the RT or the Cop version they also made one hell of a sport touring bike, if I could find one around here for under 10 grand that hasn't been SOA'd to hell and gone I'd have it already.

FXR's are for the folks that spend their time riding their bike instead of looking at it.

Yet it's still a great looking scoot.
