Default jackshaft coupler

94 fxstc. Replacing starter. Which way does JS face? I can get the drive all the in with JS bolt. It engages but does come far enough back. Pls include a pic. Since I've tried both ways. About to burn a Harley down if I do not get this repaired. Ha.

The end of the coupling (the narrow hollow part with splines on the ID) with the counterbore goes toward the jackshaft.

Then the Jackshaft, splined end in first.

Then the large diameter coupling with the snap ring in the center of the ID.

Spring.

Pinion gear. Bolt o ring and tablock.

I guess the best way of looking at it would be there is a C clip inside narrow coupler. One end is short and the other long on each side of c clip. Which side goes on starter shaft and which one faces the jackshaft/inner primary. Thanks

old thread, however, I wanted to confirm the direction of the coupling. Repair manual states counterbore side towards jackshaft. seems to make sense, the jackshaft needs to rest against the retaining ring inside the coupling. I hope that is correct!
