Two reasons, when the bike is completely stripped (engine and frame only) the CG is too far forward and its not stable on the stand as the chassis wants to nose over. the second reason is you can't remove the rear engine mount because the rear lift arm is directly under that mount, the lift adapters allow you to move the motorcycle three inches aft, just enough to solve both those issues. The added height is a bonus as it makes it easy to clean the bottom of the oil sump.
This bike served me well as my commuter for 5 years and it was cosmetically a rat, at the time I started to clean it up the plan was to wash wax and reassemble... The OCD is strong with me.

That's just about what I figured it was Stripped right down she would be front heavy as the lift arm is directly between the cylinders putting more of the weight forward and the rear isolator is directly above the other lift arm making the rear isolator difficult to get to.

I've pulled major pieces off my Wide Glide with her on the J&S needing no straps but have never taken her down to engine/frame. In this image of my Wide Glide sitting directly on the lift you can see why she'd want to nose over if she were stripped down to engine/frame if you didn't re-position the bike on the lift or use straps to keep her solid...

I'm still waiting to get my rear fender back from powder coat, when it arrives the big push begins to be road ready by January 9th. Only 4 days until vacation starts .

Harley-Davidson really does not want you to mix and match parts between product lines. So to fit the standard Dyna Glide fender to the fat bob legs you have to remove .220" from the leading edge of the mount tabs, next step is using the existing mounting holes as a guide remove all the material below the lower mount hole to form a slot as shown in the photo below.

This is the fender and fork brace in final mockup, tomorrow is touchup paint on the fender bracket as I scribed all over it, shorten up the front brake lines and actually bleed the brakes.

Got the pistons, cylinders, heads, and rockers back on. Still a long way to go but will be working on removing the O2 bungs, putting on the push rods, and throttle body next.

The Bowman Welding 16" Wide Glide sissy bar arrived today; beautiful workmanship and finish, well worth the price of admission. Made in the USA; MAGA!

I'll start the install after the 1st of the year and post up some images...
