I ride in a ll kinds of weather (excepet snow/ice), and Reaper has no issues. Your bike won't either. Just be more careful when the weather sucks.
As for parking it in the open. I use a disc lock, and lock the forks and ignition. Reaper also has the factory ignition disabler/silent alarm (no siren, but the lights flash and she won't start if it isn't turned off by the fob), so I set that every time as well. I've heard of people covering their Harleys with other manufacturers' covers. I've never felt the need for that, but it can't hurt. I would go with a waterproof one if I went that route.
Enjoy your bike,, and ride the hell out of it every chance you get!
Congrats on the new ride, I'm sure you'll have many memorable rides on it. As someone already stated: "Ride smart and ride safe"! Make sure you have full coverage on the bike (collision; fire & theft; liability) and forget about it. Use the fork locks whenever its unattended outside of your property and stop worrying. Thieves go after bikes that are easily accessible and unlocked.
I have had this happen on both my vrods. Each time it took a lot of jiggling while pushing and pulling the key trying to find that sweet spot. Maybe some spray graphite to add some lube if you have to. I really don't recommend wd40 unless that is absolutely the only thing you can find as that will attract more gunk.
Get a little can of WD-40 or lock lube and give a squirt or 2 into the slot and let it sit a while, poke the key in and start wiggling to see if things free up for you otherwise it's new switch time
