i've been using harbor freight lift and hd adapters for quite some time w/o problems. Until yesterday. After lifting bike and takin rear tire off, bike just slipped from lift. Those stupid adapters twisted on the frame. Luckily I always tie bike to lift, and have kick stand extended. Also front wheel was on, otherwise situation would be much worse. I had to put wheel under rear of frame, got lift free and yanked it fully under bike, then lifted without adapters this time.
i will probably modify lift as per info on here and will not use those adapters ever again.
I've used those adapters many times without problems, but I can picture what you're describing. I do find that I have to be very careful sliding the jack under the bike after positioning the adapters, as the jack sometimes nudges one of them around a little...
I recently bit the bullet and got a J&S... It's true what they say, once you use it you really wonder why you didn't get one a long time ago (thanks, TinCup)!
Like I said - used them many times before w/o problems too...But it takes just one bad time.
No adapters needed for J&S?

Nope. J&S is plug-n-play. It's the Cadillac of jacks.
I just can't get right with spending 4x the money I've got in a modified HF. If I had multiple bikes or a shop, absolutely...without hesitation...
There's no doubt that the J&S is pricey, but it's almost two good tools in one. For the kind of work that I end up doing in my garage, it ends up being both a jack and a lift table. For me space is always an issue and it definitely takes up more room than a jack, but it also takes up a lot less room than a table!
My bike is on it right now with the rockers, heads and barrels removed... It was a pleasure using it for stuff like this (combined with a little, comfy rolling chair).
20,000 dollars for a bike, and a couple of hundred extra for a proper lift, no brainer for me, I talked about them adapters a while ago, I have them only used them once, and they scared the life out of me, I do not have multiple rides or a garage repairing rides, but when I am under my ride doing something, I do not want 350 kilos on my head.
I have a modded sears jack. While it's not in the same league as a J&S it is plenty sturdy for what I use it for. I probably wouldn't leave my scoot jacked up on it though for long periods of time.
