My wife, then girlfriend have been riding together or on separate bikes since 1973, with 20 year break to raise 4 kids.
We have never done "club" rides, not interested. We enjoy riding with other couples with 1-4 bikes is fine or just ourselves. These are the rules.

We depart Joe's gas station at 0900 with full fuel tank.
We will decide where to ride based on where the weather isn't (point and shoot)
We stop for gas, drink and snack at 100 mile intervals.
We do fast food place around 1pm and get gas.

That's it, if miss depart time, we don't wait
If you can't ride 100 miles, don't come.
If you can't wait until 1:00 to eat, you will need to take something to eat.

Not complicated, no need for communication, other then depart time and location.
Somtimes 1-2 other couples or we end up riding by ourselves. It's all good.

I've been riding since 2002 with the same 3 guys. None of us really like bigger groups, although we do occasionally take in a charity ride or function.

Once a year or so we'll gather up the wives and take a week long vacation.
We've all ridden together for so many miles that there's really not much planning involved.
We're going to _____.
We're meeting at______.
Leaving at__________.

that's pretty much it for the planning. lol

We have a group we ride with on most weekends. It starts with Friday night Bike Night at my buddy's house. We decide before the night is over what time we will meet on Saturday morning. If we say KSU at 9 AM, we get there at 8:30. At 9 AM we leave. We might have twelve bikes or three bikes. But at the KSU time we are gone.

Once the destination is decided, Las Vegas, Yellowstone or Key West previously and Hilton Head this year, we book a hotel. The wives are good for day rides or overnighters but not 1000 mile rides. They book air fare and meet us at the destination. The guys start to plan routes and things that they want to see or do on the way there. We get together and decide what works for the three of us and go over mileage per day and where we need to be at the end of those days. Book hotels for those days as well as see if there are any Triple D stops we want to investigate in the area. We make plans for the three or four days it may take to get to the destination, include the wives for the three or four days we are all together and then whatever it is we want to to for the ride back home, which is always a different route and more of a less scheduled ride. Stop wherever, eat wherever and whatever hotel looks good when the day ends. During our ride days we take turns leading and the leader gets to stop to see the things they want or ride the roads they picked so everyone has a say. We tried bringing another rider with one year and all he did was complain. "Why didn't we go this way or stop to see that?", but he never wanted to take the lead and take his way. We haven't invited him on more rides. This is the way I like to see this country, from the seat of my bike and with a small crew of life long friends.
That sounds awesome! That's the ideal trip for taking my wife...she's down for riding but not the kinda 8-12 hour runs that we do. We may consider that once we get tired of the Smokies but so far none of my group are ready for a change.
