Because of the advice of friends on this forum, I bought HD Saddlebag Guards for my 2017 Roadglide Special prior to the low speed riding class I just completed. Thank goodness, I had no drops in the class, as I ended up not installing the ill fitting parts. The guards come in two pieces per side with a chrome portion slipping over a black coated portion before attachment to the bike. The installation problem arose because the chrome portion would not slip far enough over the black coated portion for a correct fit, leaving the choice of grinding on the black part, bending the chrome piece or both. The choices were unacceptable to me so I took the guards back. Even though I benefited from the class, and passed it, I was afraid of dropping the bike the whole time. I'm just curious if anyone else has experienced installation problems with these guards part # 90200787.
I put the guards on my street glide and had no problems at all. The QC can definitely slip through the cracks in the Chinese factories
My parts guy thinks the same thing because the part # is correct. I don't know if I want to go through another install hassle just to find that the next set has the same problem. The misfit on mine had to do with the location of the "bulge" on the black part of the kit.
I installed the on my wife's new SGS in case she dropped hers at low speeds. They went on very easy and fit perfectly. I would just exchange them and try again.
I just installed mine on my RGS other than the powder coat being slightly thick I was very happy with fitment. I bought them for my 2011 RGU and same thing no problems.
Thanks for everyone's comments, I picked up another set of saddle bag guards from my dealership yesterday and experienced no installation problems with just one exception. The steel "bumpers" that bolt on each side of the top frame in the center seat area can't be reused because the bolts securing the top of the guards are too short to fit if the bumpers are "stacked" with the top of the guards. The instructions do not specify what to do do with the bumpers. Accordingly, I checked with the dealer and left them off.
I just left the "bumpers" off when I installed my guards. I ended up taking them off anyway, never got used to the looks on my black RGS. I like them better on your orange SGS.
