Default Harley Basket Case

I have a 1975 Harley Davidson FXE Super Glide 74ci that was completely dismantled by my husband to chrome and paint the parts. He died before putting it back together. It ran great before he took it apart. Where would I go to sell it, and how do I find out it's worth?

If you are serious you must provide a lot more information.

How has it been stored? Clear title? Pictures? Why now?

You can list it the sale here but think you need a few post. Best bet is ebay. Do a little searching, shoot a dozen pictures and take advantage of the 6 free listing. Could just list it free till it sells as one big bunch of parts but if it goes for 1000s, the fee will be much higher than listing it as a bike. Start a little high and set each week to reduce it. Have a minimum you will take each week below your advertised value.
You can sell it. Harley stuff goes like crazy on eBay at a fair price. Shortly after I retired, I cleaned my garage of 50 years of Harley stuff in a year.
I have a friend that has one. I believe it has AMF on the tank and is the first year for an electric start. Still, has the kick starter.

Not a clue what it's worth in a basket. Price it the first few weeks like it is running but be ready to go down. Just state what you have said. My guess if your husband was going to paint and chrome, it's OK. Someone local will surely come by.

If I saw someone in that situation (locally), I'd gladly help them sell it as an impartial third party. Maybe someone here can help if this is not some troll job.

Someone who knows the bike (that bike is in the zone for some level of collectibility) and who can take pictures and give an honest assessment of value so you can then sell to another party without getting ripped - that would be your best option.

Here is where you will get taken "I have a friend" - "oh it's worth nothing in parts", etc.

It's worth something but those basket cases are that for a reason so don't expect to have the "crown jewels".

Pay 'em $50 or $100 for the service - out of proceeds of the sale - not up front.

The impartial third party is key because a direct deal someone could bamboozle more easily. Also - check the bluebooks for value assembled as a guide.

Just a reminder, in order to buy/sell/trade on HD Forums you need to have 5 posts and be a member for 30 days.

Sorry about your husband. Good luck in your quest to sell the bike.

Sorry for your loss. That's a tough one.

A lot of this comes down to your personal circumstances and intentions.

If you are looking for someone to take over the project to honor your husband, that will lead you in one direction.

If you just want this pile of parts out of your life, that will lead you in another.

To put this in dollars, the ceiling on what you can expect here is probably something around $3k, but a more realistic number is something like half of that. Those are just educated guesses, and much depends on the quality of what you have. In average condition (and all together), that is something like a $6k to $7k bike.

That get's to the other personal factor here. If you have the time and inclination (and perhaps financial necessity) to try to get top dollar out of this, that points one direction. If not, that points another.

Bottom line: If you just want it gone and don't care about much else, call a few local independent v-twin repair shops, tell them the story, and tell them you are taking offers. Get a few and go from there.

If you want more than that...either to honor your husband or to maximize the amount of money you get...you're going to have to find someone local you can trust to guide you through this.

Best of luck to you.

You are about 5 years behind anyone wanting to build bikes. You will only be able to sell locally as no one is going to take a chance on condition. I'd say Craigslist for $1 thousand and be happy you don't have it the rest of your life.

Be careful with Craigslist. A lot of shady people on there. Try to make sure there is some else there with you if you have any Craiglisters come to your home.

I'm a little too far to just wander up there for fun,but with some pictures[especially engine and transmission]I'd say it would be worth close to 2 thousand. Sorry for the loss of your man.

Basketcase is generally worth $1500-$2000, maybe another $500 if it is still original parts (sheetmetal, frame, enginem trandsmission, etc).

In many states the engine and frame must match in order to avoid a "special construction" tag.

An almost stock 75 FEX would look like this (front brake line is NOS)
