Default Ape hanger questions!

Hey all , still have the factory bars on my heritage. trying to plan ahead on doing apes. would like to this winter. never changed bars before or anything , planning on going to Burly 1-1/4 14s. pretty sure those are going to put me right at shoulder height . might go 16s havn't measured anything yet anyways. if I'm not mistaken factory is at 10 inches ? also are the risers 2 inches factory ?

last question is I know traditionally apes don't go in line with the forks. you want them verticle which is exactly what I want. but I also at some point would like to look at putting a fairing on my bike like a reckless or something. im not sure a fairing can be ran with apes? I don't know anyone personally who has both together and its hard to picture without seeing also. if at some point I wanted a fairing would I have to look at carlini or something that curves as it goes up to clear the fairing ? just trying to look long term. I don't exactly have a cholo sled going on here and I love the curved bars on those style bikes but im not sure its for mine! does anyone have some advice to kind of help me look in the right direction?

thanks!

Vertical looks stupid, but you'll end up putting them where theyre comfortable. The height of bars will make a difference in how vertical they end up.

Fairing is a no go. Tried with 16s and they have to be pulled down too far to work. Maybe could pull it off with curved risers but would look comical.

agree & agree

(old pics)
I put my bars where I like them and to hell with anyone who doesn't like it.

I don't know about a fairing but the removable windshield works just fine.

I've had nothing but great experience and support from http://www.wild1inc.com
(WO509: 16" Chubby Bars: http://www.shop.wild1inc.com/WO509-C...NGER-WO509.htm)
The wide set bars are much more comfortable for me and I'm a pretty small guy (5'6" 170lbs.)with old man issues before my time. You might get a hold of them or just cruise their site. They likely have a fairing option for you somehow.

A little off track but potentially relevant if you're interested in Wild1's...
I totaled the bike and the set pictured above. I rebuilt the bike and picked up a set of 16's off craigslist, being told they were Wild1's. They weren't and after a 5 or 6 years, they cracked at the wire loom hole between the bar mounts. I called Wild1's and they didn't hesitate to send me a replacement set, at least a decade or more later. When I sent them the "knock-offs", they were cool about it and worked it out with me, while I was in Sturgis. Stand up company all around with a well engineered and good looking product. I'll go there again if I ever need another set.

knock-offs:

Installed on the bike as it sits now:

On the bike w/bars and shoulder height:

I've got the larger diameter 16" apes on mine and at first had them vertical. Then someone suggested that I try them in line with the forks and let me tell you that made a hell of a difference. Not only did it look much better IMO but it handled like a brand new bike.

I respectfully disagree. Short people running 16"s rolled way back when they should be running 12's looks stupid. People running 14" apes on 4+" pullback risers look stupid. Running your apes straight up (within a couple of degrees) is the best look IMO. You can't tell me this bike looks stupid, right???

To the OP, if you get bars like mine, that have a curve forward you will have no problem running them close to vertical with a fairing. I have a good friend/customer that has a Reckless Fairing on his '09 FLHR, he is running the same 16" Carlini Gangster apes I am and all fits well, and looks good.

To me the only thing that looks dumber than this

are these curved forward things.

I swear, I think some places make things just to see who they can fool into buying them. Of course that's just me.
