This happened while I was pushing the bike around the shop. Had it happened on a ride, it would be a total disaster. Ever hear of this? I've had risers strip and pull loose, but this is way worse. Are these top clamps prone to breakage? Lose the two piece bars? Forged risers?

Yikes!

Can't use 2 piece bars with that cheap top clamp and those tall risers or you will eat some gravel sooner or later. You wanna run the 2 part you need a much beefier clamp assembly that captures the top and bottom completely.

Way you got it now there's massive torque on the little die cast top clamp, be happy it happened before you rode it.

Ouch... that could have been all bad. Glad you weren't on the road.

My friend up in central Pa has a 72FX w/two piece handle bars and had the same problem . Here's what he did to correct it. He had a piece of flat stock aluminium welded between the risers. He said he did this 15 yrs ago and hasn't had a problem.

More torque pushing by the bars than riding. YEP - be glad it was pushing and not in a hard turn or panic stop.

Twizted....like one of these? I was thinking same diagnosis as you. Need to capture top and bottom if I use two piece bars.

Just bought this in its place.

Yah that's the OEM FL bar clamp and they work well but there many beefier billet clamps out there too that gives some options in riser heights. Do some digging you'll see them.

Bars are fairly cheap and you can find another top clamp to fit the risers you have already if you want to keep the height & look.

May not make a big difference but the clamps are on backward/upside down...

I belong to the DBA...the Dyslexic Biker's Association. If something can be put on backwards or upside down, trust me, I'll do it.
