Default Looking to paint my Dyna Wide Glide

Hi all,

I was wondering if I could get some advice on painting my '06 Dyna Wide Glide. I'm in Southern California and it's pretty expensive to have it done here. I'm thinking I may do it myself.

My two concerns are: one, getting the front fender (which is only a couple bolts onto the forks sliders on the Dynas), the rear fender, and gas tank off and then back on. And two, of course doing the paint job correctly.

The paint on there now is the metallic yellow with the orange flames and the red Harley Davidson bar tank emblems that was common from the factory that year... it's nice, and it's all original. But my accessories and trim are Willie G. and I just really wanna do matte black with Willie G. Skull tank emblems (which I already found).

I am by no means a professional at this, hell I wouldn't even qualify as an amateur, pretty sure you'd have to have done something like this before to even be considered that haha.

So... what do people recommend? Thanks.

Unless you are absolutely, positively, sure you are going to keep the bike forever DON'T DO IT. As the likelihood is high that it will wind up looking like chit and drop the value of your bike by at least $2k.

I agree with this ^^^^ and I want to add if you want to keep your bike forever remove the parts yourself and take it to a professional to paint it for you. My estimate is for around $500 you can even have a hard candy color of your choice done. I know a guy in SD who does a good job on tanks and even custom helmet paintings.

Good reason people often buy a second set of tins... so they can 'play'

Thanks dude, I appreciate that. I don't have to worry about the value tanking if the a professional does it right? Right now my plan actually is to have the painter who works at a shop that a guy in a club I'm prospecting for owns. What I'm gonna do I think is buy a front and rear fender, they have a wide glide tank at the shop that they're going to give me, and prime and paint all of that matte black and install it… Then I'm going to sell the mint condition OEM tank, front and rear fenders that are on the bike now that I was going to have painted. He actually came up with this idea because he thought it was sacrilege to strip and paint mint condition OEM parts on a Dyna of its age. I should actually be able to make some money off of this too.

Thoughts?

What year your bike? Have a picture?
How much are they going to charge for all of that work and parts?

I wouldnt be worried about value tanking as long as the paint job is professional. It's not like its a 71 GTO convertible.

I dont think mint condition yellow with red flame parts are going to cover the costs.

'06 Dyna Wide Glide (pic below)
I'm gonna buy an OEM front fender, already found one for 50 bucks on ebay, and buy an OEM rear fender which I also found on eBay for 200 bucks (haven't made any purchases yet). They're gonna throw in the OEM tank they have and the paint job and labor for about $600 they said. So I'm guessing I'll be about $850 into it give or take. I figure I could get $1,000 bucks for the tank and fenders that are on there now... everything on the bike is original OEM Harley Davidson. The only reason I think that I can get a lot for these parts (particularly the tank) is because finding OEM Harley parts from a bike that's 11 years old, in mint condition, not a single scratch or blemish, is hard to find. And, all the parts that will be painted matte black will be OEM Harley parts also, just not original to this bike.

I tried to paint my FXD with rattle-can black gloss enamel but I kept having problems with the paint and humidity could not get it to look the way I wanted (and I really didn't want black). So I stripped all the enamel off back down to bare metal and looked at other options. I had the tins were already stripped and etched but I was getting quotes of $500 and up to prime it and shoot one plain color in lacquer.

I have an old compressor so a neighbor encouraged me to get a spray gun, regulator, and filters and automotive lacquer and paint it myself. So I did.

I set up a small paint booth using a fan to set up a draft ventilation system in a corner of my garage after messing up the front fender trying to use a cheap Harbor Freight spray gun, I got a better gun and some instructions on how to set it up and went at it...midnight blue with a clear metallic mid coat and three clear coats all cut and buffed out...

The results were better than I hoped but I spent a LOT of time getting here...
