Every once in a while you get good deals on new old stock but you can also in some case get lightly used good parts as well...don't get too discouraged, you're onthe right track, you might loose riding time but it's better to end up with a better more dependable bike in my opinion. This happened to me with my very first bike , a 82 Maxxim 650...
I started the long process of derusting (is that even a word?) the tank today. Today was just some BBs and bolts to get the major chunks. It's a slow process but things are actually looking a bit better in there!
Way less chunk!
Oh yeah, that's an improvement.
Smooth as a baby's butt.
Lots of particulate coming out.
Does anyone know what this grey stuff is that is coating the tank? It's probably something like Kreem, but I'm wondering if the muriatic acid bath with get rid of it...
the -02 tells you the first model year the part was used. I typically search without the dash code
Thanks for the info; I've found a few candidates on ebay that look serviceable.

Okay, I'll look into this and see if I can find one on Craigslist

Nope, this is just the result of storing a bike with a small amount of fuel (less than half a gallon) for 5+ years in one of the most humid climates in the United States. Let this be a lesson to you (or anyone else reading this!)

Someone else on this forum offered up a tank in a different color but I am waiting to hear how much he wants for it. Also, not sure how repainting it would work. In the meantime, I'm going to keep at it.
I've had less than stellar luck with Kreem in the past, but this project might be a candidate for it...I understand that the formula has changed to resist ethanol. OP, if you use Kreem, I believe they sell a kit which includes an etching liquid, might be muriatic acid for all I know. But if you get rid of the rust/corrosion, might just be best to forgo a tank liner and run as is.
