HaHaHaHaHa.......Different oils smell different. What oil you running?
Trust me they do. Years ago a friend was running John Deere branded motor oil in his minibike. That was the stinkinest (is that a word) oil there is. Anytime you were near him and it was running you could smell it. Nasty smelling chit...

Redline is what I run most of the time in the engine.

Everyone's smeller is different...I rarely smell mine at all, even on bikes with the catch-can or filter right at the air cleaner.
I don't think I've ever run any John Deere oil, but I have run some oils that were particularly strong smelling.
All I did was take off the stock ac and put on the DK425 with catchcan. So the fact that the breather holes are venting to the can rather than back inside the motor is the only change which pretty much means that's the problem don't you think? But going to eliminate that possibility you mentioned by temporarily moving catch can to rear of bike and see what happens.
Not necessarily....you changed two things, the AC i.e. stock to DK425 and added the external breather catch can. So could be either. Keep in mind that stage 1 ACs have more air flow and therefore more open than stock. But you are in the right direction using process of elimination.
