I don't know brothers, lately I have been obsessed with choppers. Big rake springer, maybe a shovel or perhaps big pro-street..?? Any of guys have/had/ridden them? Are they as enjoyable on the road as they are parked? anything I should know about them?
I don't think I could possibly regret adding one but I have no hands-on experience.
a deraked chopper is much easier to handle than a long bike. i've ridden deraked bikes with a 22 inch over tubes and it handed fine. the problem was seeing around the gas tank. never been much of a springer fan. most choppers myself and friends have had over the years never got any longer than 12 over wideglides. i do like the ridge frames and have had several, but my back will no longer allow me to ride one, that and my left legs gone. the bike in the above pic is bad *** in my book.

Damn right that Pan is bad *** Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm also a fan of rigids. Kickstart of course. I have seen a lot of builder bikes too. While they don't typically 'move' me like the one in the pic or Easy Rider style. Every now and then I come across some amazing metal in the 20K range 130+ ci, 300+ tire, open primary...
These two are unique, even though I am all about the old school stuff.
I have 2 pro street choppers . Softail with a 250 rear tire. 1 with a 300 it's a hard tail.. they are near 9 ft long.. ride great.. But neither are long distance riders.. good for 100 miles then I need a rest.. handle well. Very fast.. I have s&s engines on Both
To me, the engine makes the chopper.
I prefer a OEM Panhead of 1952 and later-as close to stock specs as possible.
I don't need a raped ape- just a sturdy engine that consistently performs.
The rest is gearing, shifter- suicide or mousetrap, fork-springer or tube, brakes, and seat. the sheet metal is as desired by the individual builder.
Frisco Choppers created one of my favorites even though they used STD for the engine.
Paughco makes a great rigid frame with built in rake. http://www.paughco.com/2008-catalog/...20Paughco.html https://www.ebay.com/b/Paughco-Motor...5562/bn_565341

I posted this request/discussion with a little apprehension, I am glad I did.

Cool bikes! 100 mi. sounds perfect. I wouldn't expect more than a jaunt out to the country - visit a winery or what not. Thanks man!

I love this shot. True old school, frame tipped up... This, being pretty much all I know about you, is all I need to know to say 'Dude you are cool'
Riding test!#$%! Love it...
So I am seeing these in the 6 - 10K range with pristine examples 15K+. King/Queen seat, tall pipes and sissy, pan or shovel... It's what i have been searching for. If I came across a bike just like that, there would be some serious decision making to be done. Cheers man and thanks!

I saw this beauty in some thread recently I think. If I had that bike I would literally sleep with it. Agree on the engine. Must have that long firing gap delay. Do the aftermarket Pans and Shovels have the same firing rhythm as the original HD engines?
Mine is a more modern pro street style.. this was a picture long ago.. did lots of work on it since then. But you get the idea.. I wish I could get my money back I have invested in these..lol
