Default Will it catch fire?

Trying to weld a gas tank bracket and wanted to be cautious and see if anyone had a similar experience.
  • it's used gas tank so it did have gas in it before.
  • its been empted and dried around 1 week.
  • Welding point are here (see pic) & away from the tank.

Even though the tank is dry it still smells of petrol.

I will wrap the tank with wet towel when I'm doing it.

Would it be ok to proceed? Or should I clean it right out with water or something?

thanks for your advice!

Start your car or truck and fill the tank with the exhaust, that will kill the explosive power of the fumes left behind

If I recall correctly when I had my 48 the bracket is fixed to the frame and not the tank? Simply remove the tank! Nitrogen would also purge the tank of any explosive fumes.

Fumes are way more volatile than fuel.

If the tank is off and you don't have a problem cleaning it after you are done fill it will water and don't worry about it.

It's the vapor left from gas...gasoline is always evaporating, and the vapor is highly flammable. It won't catch fire so much as it will go BOOM!
Don't mess with it if you don't know. Take it to a pro.

The smell is the vapour or 'fumes' left behind which have an extremely low temperature flashpoint. The flashpoint is when it goes BOOM as described above.

If you intend doing the welding and need to ask what precautions to take the best one I can offer is the one already wisely offered by RHPAW.
