Default Starting my Road King with a key.

Hello, this is most likely a stupid ? But here goes.. My husband passed away a few months ago.. And we have a 06 Road King Custom. The bike is at my daughters house in the trailer.. Well, my son in law went into the trailer the other day and claims to have started the bike... I have the key for the ignition.. He has one of the keys to open the trailer.. That's how he got into it.. Now, this bike is in mint condition.. That was my husbands baby... Not a scratch on it... I had the handle bars locked.. I don't want nor need anything happening to this bike.. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it at this point... Way to early for me to be thinking of that.. (still grieving the loss of my husband.) Can someone plz tell me is this possible.. He told my daughter that you don't need a key to start it as long as the handle bars are unlocked... Ty! Shelly.

The ignition on that bike is a switch. If that switch is moved to the ON position, and he hits the START button, it should fire up. The key you mentioned just locks and unlocks various items on the bike, like the forks, ignition, saddlebags, etc. If the ignition was left unlocked, no key is needed to start it.

Ty so much for a speedy response... Ok now, is there anything I can do so that he is unable to start it again.. I can't put the trailer at my home bcuz I just don't have the room and our borough does not allow trailers..

The ignition switch is a rotary device on the fuel tank. It has a flip-top cap on it. Flip that open, and use your key to lock the ignition. After that, it won't start without unlocking the ignition.

my 06 had the security system, the key fob had a button, when pushed twice it would enable the system and not allow the bike to start unless it was turned off with the fob.

Are you sure it wasn't one push to arm and two pushes to disarm?

Another option could be to remove the 40 amp main fuse. I think it is located on the left side behind the side panel. There's where it is on my 2013 RKC. I gather that will make the bike inoperable but not completely unstartable if someone found out it was missing the fuse. It would be secondary layer of protection.

If you lock the ignition switch, and he has one of these...

He could in theroy still start it. But then it would be criminal

Just a thought, but you could just ask your son-in-law to not mess with the bike, if that's what you're after. He probably thought he was doing you a favor, considering the forks are locked and there is no way he could ride it.

Going by there and locking the ignition without saying something is kind of a passive aggressive way to handle it.
