Nice ride! I have only 36k on my 90 glide. This is definitely my favorite bike ever owned. And this forum is a great place with a wealth of answers. Like they said, it is a generally peaceful forum with nothing but help offered. Probably the best forum I belong to as everyone seems willing to pitch in and provide feedback. Have fun on that cushy ride.

Your welcome to hang out here with us Pete, and welcome to the wonderful world of EVO's--bulletproof riding if there ever was.

Pick some good lubes, follow the maintenance chart, and if ya want to, tweak the motor a bit to put a bit more more grunt in it.

If your going to do lifters and can bearing why not chuck a mild perfomance cam in there, adjust carb and air better air cleaner, free flow exhaust and the roughly dozen or so ponies you get out of that will make you smile.

I run a CI-4 or CI-4+ diesel motor oil in both of my 96's, Dexron II in the bargeglide primary and Type F in the softail primary, and any decent quality 75-90 gear oil on special at your local source store (currently using Valvoline dura-gear).

All Smiles,

V2Evo96

My FLHp has 54k on it and she is sweet. I really dont like the sound of the TC so on my bobber build I bought a brand new EVO straight from harley. I cant wait to finish it.

Welcome to the world of EVOs. Also, EV27 cam in both my motors. Runs real good.

I have two 1998 Electra Glides....one being a carbed Classic and the other being EFI Ultra. Both are fine bikes.

Yours is the 1998 FLHTCUI Anniversary model. Just like my 1998 FLHTCUI except I have the vivid black/mistique green.

The EFI system is the early EFI system Harley offered. Magnetti Marreli is the name of it, it has a tendency to loose its cold idle memory. Therefore, that does get adjusted from time to time. Not a bad system, unfortunately....many people including Harley dealerships do not understand that system.

Check the transmission pulley. After 40,000 miles and especially if you don't know how the machine was ridden. Anyways, the pulley has a way of loosening. There are two allen bolts keeping a lockplate there to keep the pulley nut in place. Not uncommon for one or both allen bolts to break or to vibrate loose. After that happens, the pulley nut backs off and then the pulley wobbles. Fact is, the OEM stock pulley should be changed from 32 teeth to a good aftermarket 34 teeth. It lowers you RPM somewhat on the highway. No more doing 70mph@3,000rpm. Grab a telescopic mirror and take a look at it.

Biggest thing with the Electra Glides, especially the Ultra's are the electronics. There are so many wires on these bikes. EFI, radio, CB, lights, guages, and various other things....lots of wires and plug ins. If something ever has to come disconnected, always apply dielectric grease before reconnecting.

If you haven't already flushed the brake system for the rear brake....you are in for a real treat. The resivour is located on the downtubes and difficult to check/add fluid there. Any resivour from 1999-2008 master cylinder/resivour will fit it. Only the master cylinder from Electra Glides and Softails work. Direct bolt on and makes brake maintenance a snap. It also makes your rear brake feel stronger as well.

The crappy old INA cam bearing is probably in there, unless the previous owner had it changed out to the Torrington bearing. I would try to find out for sure.

Alot of people will suggest in changing out the cam. Don't install any cam in there. It has to be the cam designed to work with the EFI EVO engine. It's got to work with EFI or it may act really funky.

I highly encourage you to purchase the offical OEM shop manual for the bike as well as the OEM parts manual.

I could go on and on.....welcome here and feel free to ask questions. The touring section is alright anything dealing with the EVO....this site is the best.

Thanks for all the heads up stuff. Wish I would have nown about checking the tranny pulley while I had the primary off to check clutch plates and houseing and etc in there. EFI system has a Kurykan Fuel Manager hooked up to it, figure that is because it has true duals and I can understand that (previous owner included Owners Manuals (2) and the instructions for the fuel manager.

Harley Shop Manual is on order (dealership didn't have one in stock). When I pick it up I'll see if I can order the parts manual.

So that's waht the 'oil cooler' looking thing is between the down tubes above the rectifier.

Took the wife out on Sunday, guess she sumed it up "Now this is a Harley, it vibrates!!"

X2 on not changing the cam. I changed mine and just went back to stock, it runs much better over all the rpm range, harley knew what they were doing on the stock cam. Excellent engine over all but do change out the cam bearing if it is still stock and throw in a new set of lifters while you are in there.
