Red face Which cam for torquey 80 EVO ?

Hello all,

my ride is a 1995 Dyna Superglide Sport with a (so far) absolutely virgin 80cu.in motor.
Never been upgraded, ever. Virgin, you could say.

I have decided to do a few upgrades, namely air filter, carb and exhaust,
and a new performance camshaft... which is where I'm stumped.

Information overload.

Andrews ? 27...36...46...
Crane Fireball ?
Screaming Eagle ? I have found no fewer than FIVE SE performance cams... SE1, 3, 4, 11, 57...

So... considering I use my bike for daily commuting and weekend trips (and maybe one day long range solo riding) which cam profile would you suggest ?
I am after a torquey cam at low-medium revs, I have no need for a "screamin', hollerin', redline cam"

Hey Romy, I have a 99 FXSTC, Last Evo Big Twin, 15 years ago, I did the Stage 2 Upgrade with the HP Cam, Dyno Kit for CV carb, etc. You can go on the Websites of H-D, S&S, Andrews, Woods Bros., Zippers, etc., there's plenty of info out there, for exactly what you want to do ! I was over my H-D Tech's shop, he has been a Certified H-D Master Tech since 1972. He had just buttoned up his 03 Duece, with Hydraulic SE Cam Support, oil pump, etc., all SE, EXCEPT he used a Fueling Cam ? This Guy has built Nitro Drag Bikes !
PS, My 2 cents; I'm still using the Modified CV Carb, if I was to get a New Carb, it would be a Mikuni 42, Bolt on 5 to 10 HP ! I also use 4 prong platinum tip, Bosch 4478, awesome spark plugs, like putting cams in ! Good Luck, Boston Jim

Cam threads have become like oil threads.... Everyone will have a favorite. And some will be rather dogmatic about their allegiance to them...

In the Andrews line, the EV27 is pretty much the 'go to' cam for an EVO. However, the power doesn't really start to come on until 'around' 2500 rpms. It works best with a better set of pipes, upgraded CV carb/air cleaner, and aftermarket ignition. I have been running an EV27 in my FLHS (ElectraGlide Sport) since 1994. It was a MAJOR improvement in performance on a very anemic bike.

If you want just an improvement, the EV13 is a decent cam. Much better than the stock cam.

There are a number of cams for the EVO, from a number of reputable cam grinders. So you really need to do a lot of homework to find the right one for your riding style, your roads, and your pocket book. But, in my opinion, most are better than the stock Harley cam.

Like Hackd I used an EV27 in my 1990 FLHS for many years, along with a Crane ignition and modified air filter. If your bike is an International spec, not a USA import, it has more restrictive features that are well worth removing, making a new ignition system very important, to get better advance curves than stock. A Supertrapp 2-into1 exhaust will suit an FXR and give great low/mid range performance. If the SE air filter is still available that will be just fine. Sorted! Just need to tweak the carb and we're done.

I swapped cams last year an it feels like a new bike! Completely different. My 99 Fatboy was a dog with the stock cam. I went with a V thunder 3010 which is similar to the Andrews 27, got a K&N filter kit that got rid of the recirc from DK customs, bought a 2 into 1 patriot defender pipe from a member on here which performs well. My carb was jetted before I bought the bike but check out CV performance on how to make you stock carb perform. It was running well but I went a head an picked up a Ultima ignition for $125 off ebay an it seems to really smooth the bike out. I went with the 3010 because I found a great deal on it on eBay an googled it an found great reviews. First test ride after the swap I hit the rev limiter for the first time.

A couple of years ago, this is what I did. It pulls hard right from idle all the way up. In other words, it feels like a nice flat torque curve that is somewhat biased towards the low and mid rpm. I never put it on a dyno. It probably is not making big peak numbers. What it does do is make a lot of power right off the line and the power is concentrated in the rpm range I ride in while still having plenty to carry me to redline if I would want to. This is not the be all end all build. What it is is a nice set of parts that work good together that didn't break the bank. Sure, it costs more than just buying a cam and throwing it in there, but it is also yielded very good results. I feel like I got a lot of bang for the buck. The milling of the heads increased the compression, but more importantly, equalized the combustion chamber volume better than the factory did. This resulted in an uncharacteristiclly smooth running Evo.

Andrews EV-13 cam $119.95
Dynojet Thunderslide with Jet Kit 8708 $128.42
Crane Cams Time Saver Adjustable Push Rods 4-0030 $126.72
Dynatek 2000P DD2000-HD2EP ignition module $145
Crane Cams big axle lifters 3-2050. set of four for $189.95
Crane Cams cam bearing 7-0400 $15.51
Cometic Cam Gasket Service Kit C9624F $19.04
Cometic EST Top End Gasket Kit w/.030" Head Gasket $87.39
Screaming Eagle Air Cleaner Kit (Carbureted Evo) 295433-99B $127.96
New set of stock rings

Milled Heads .025"

Great !

What's the difference between an Andrews EV23 and an EV27 ?

Perhaps EV23 has a rounder lobe grind than an EV27 ?

This may help you.

When I was agonizing over the numerous choices I spent a lot of time here

as well as followed the various links on that page.

Well if your not going to bump up compression stay with a EV27. If you bump up compression then you can go with EV46, which produces and **** ton of torque from 2500 rpm till blow up.... Of course a good set of pipes are needed in either case.

For a bone stocker, SE-4, EV-27 or a Sifton 143-EV. My favorite, the Woods W6. All real good in the mid range.....
