2018 ultra limited water pump failure and replacement
My water pump on my 2028 ultra limited failed, the pump motor locked up. I started my repair by reading all the water pump posts. There are a lot of them. I didnt want to pay the $400 dollars for a new pump from HD. So I found a $100 pump that is working great so far. Ill update as I get more miles on it. The good thing is that it was a lot cheaper and I got it overnight from Amazon. I ride daily to work so I didnt want to wait for lead time from HD.
The pierburg made pump from HD p/n 2600048 is what was on my bike. It is basically the same pump that is on the Audi and Porsche but with 12mm hose connections rather than the 20mm connections that are standard on the cars. The only other solutions I found online (other than an OEM water pump) involved hose adapting from 20mm to 12mm and I didnt want to do that do to the space available on the front of the bike.
so here is what I did: I ordered a pump from Amazon for an Audi $100. Swapped the impeller cover (this cover is where the hose connections are) and the rubber mounting ring for pump. Installed the new pump on the bike (with the impeller cover and rubber mount from old pump) and its working great.

This is a variable speed pump. There is no thermostat on 2018 and up. The three pin arrangement is 12vdc/Variable speed signal/ground. The ecm supplies the middle pin voltage (speed) to the pump. So when the temp sensor sends the temp signal to the ecm and then the ecm sends the voltage out to the middle pin and sets the speed of the pump.
on the 14-17 twin cam water cooled the pump is a two pin configuration so if you convert that to this style pump you will need to use an adapter cable to change this three pin to match the two pin harness on the twin cam.
This concerns me, My 2015 failed at less than 25k. really bittered me, right before vacation. I am still not over it. I installed the harley one, thinking the problem was behind me, and just the legacy of replacing the harley parts with something better.
But 2018, is the improved one??
What I would do different if I have time, was a longer bolt for the band that holds it in place to make it easier to get on and off. Though I can't tell if this one is same.
